Price - Band of shares on BSE

AS on today i.e. 18-03-2009, after the markets have closed, on the basis of closing prices of shares on BSE, here are some interesting figures.

There are 7,765 listed companies on BSE, out of which 2,590 scrips were traded today. (This is an average number of traded scrips daily). It means that more than 5000 scrips are not traded at all on BSE.

Now, let us see the price-bands.

According to bhav-copy of BSE:

Format below is price-band - Number of shares (today's closing)

Less than or equal to Re. 0.99 - 77 Scrips

Between Re. 1 and Rs. 10 - 751 Scrips

Between 10.01 and 99.99 - 1372 Scrips

Between 100 and 499.99 - 332 Scrips

Between 500 and 1000 - 46 Scrips

More than 1000 - 27 Scrips.

These figures shows that out of 7,765 listed companies, only 46+27 = 73 (not even 1%) scrips are trading above Rs. 500.

Above Rs. 100, total scrips trading are : 332+46+27=405 (just above 5%).

Even if we forget scrips that are not traded and count %age from the traded scrips only then,

Above Rs. 500, the %age is 2.80% and

Above Rs. 100, the %age is 15.55%.

In other words daily about 85% scrips are trading below Rs. 100.
