Inflation at historic low

Wholesale price index rose 0.27% in the 12 months ended on Mar14, 2009. It is below the previous week's annual rise of 0.44% but was more than economists' forecast of 0.13%. It is lowest annual reading in the history of current series since 1990.

The annual inflation rate was 8.02% during the corresponding week of the previous year.

The wholesale price index is more watched than the consumer price index (which is published monthly) and the former covers a higher number of products and is published weekly.

The index of manufactured products, which has a 63.8 percent weight in the wholesale price index, rose 0.2 percent, while the index of primary articles that includes food items gained 0.1 percent.

China last month suffered its first deflation since 2002, joining Ireland, Taiwan and Thailand in recording record falling prices in their most recent figures.
